Collapsible geodesic dome

Collapsible geodesic dome

Sketches and ideas developed during the project year in sculpture at the Royal Institute of Art are presented. The aim was to create a collapsible, heat-insulated geodesic dome that can serve as a greenhouse and culture house in the Maretopia project.

A new modular system for temporary architecture, both on land and on rafts on water. Sustainable greenhouses with built-in electronics and low weight, cost and ecological footprint. The overall aim of Maretopia is to create a floating visual landmark and an arena for discussing water and its connection to ecological research. Floating plant islands with water-purifying plants, several greenhouses and a platform for art and discussion programmes are meant to enable public encounters. The use of these structures indirectly reminds the public that legal questions about the use of public space and urban planning are fairly unregulated, and can inspire people's own initiatives. Stockholm's waters are special, with their broad surfaces, archaeological values worth protecting beneath the surface, and the many institutions that manage the water. Artists are invited to discuss, analyse and work across different media on questions around the climate crisis and how we humans try to control nature, or have lost control.
