Key Stone Space

Commissioned by: Österängen art hall, the East Vättern Scarp Landscape Biosphere Reserve

An artwork for people but also an interactive sculpture that birds and other species can use. The work is placed in trees and consists of metal sculptures whose forms mimic so-called keystones. Stone arches are built by stacking shaped stones on top of one another like an arch. At the very top sits the keystone, which locks all the stones below together and prevents the whole from collapsing. The concept of the "keystone" serves as a metaphor for a system where the parts depend on a unique, load-bearing component.

The term "hyperkeystone species" is used to mark humanity's special role in the food chain, where it affects all other species and their habitats. The mirror-bright surface of the sculptures is meant to convey this message. Who do you see in the surface's reflection, and what is their place in nature?
