Mejan Identity

An installation made up of Post-it notes and films from the graduating class's hanging of its first-year exhibition in 2004 and the group exhibition for the graduating year 2009 (of which this installation is a part), as well as filmed interviews with the students at the exhibition. Each year around 800 people apply to the Royal Institute of Art and about 25 are admitted. The crossed-out numbers on the notes mean that the person was not admitted. The artist has assisted with the admissions, and the notes are gathered from all 5 years at the school. They begin at the top with the year 1 notes and end at the bottom with the 2009 notes.

The work poses the following questions:

How have the students been affected by being admitted, attending the school and graduating?

How are people affected by not being admitted?

Which symbols, heroes, myths, rituals and values have been adopted during the education?
