Walking Through Walls

The occult, the esoteric or the hidden comes in many forms and expressions. The meaning of mathematical formulas is hidden from the uninitiated; sexual feelings and organs are kept hidden in everyday life; the body's organs and the images inside the body are hidden by our skin. Gradiva was an image of a walking woman frozen mid-step, depicted on a Roman relief. Sigmund Freud had a copy of the relief on the wall above his famous couch and connected it to a story he believed proved love's healing power. A young archaeologist fell in love with his find and projected the image of his lost love onto the image in stone.
